Liberty High School History
Liberty High School started out over 100 years ago. It was originally called The University School, and was started in Bridgeport, Connecticut in 1892. The school still operates as a private high school, and is one of the oldest and most well-established high schools in America.
In 1982, The University School added the Department of Distance Education. This was in direct response to the growing need to reach out to students who let their high school education lapse and could not attend traditional classes, but needed to make up courses in order to receive their diplomas. In 1997, the Department of Distance Education added a full high school diploma program, consisting of 32 courses that helped adult students make up all or any of their high school education and receive a real diploma as a result.
As the Department of Distance Education expanded and increased our enrollments, we decided to form a separate and independent school. In 2004, we changed our name to Liberty High School, a name our board felt represented the new opportunities made available to adult students who could not return to a classroom to earn their high school diploma. We were granted approval to offer our High School Diploma Program by the well-known and top-rated Vermont State Board of Education. Our offices and staff are now located in Brattleboro, Vermont, and we have changed our name to Liberty High School
In 2003, in response to the dramatic demand from students with computers and internet connections who wanted to take their courses online, we expanded our offering to include Liberty High School Online. Liberty Online, as most people call it, is the internet version of our successful high school diploma completion program. In many ways it is faster and has more support from our staff and teachers than our older distance education program. Many of our adult students tell us they think it’s even a better way to get their High School Diploma than when they were in a real school.
Since we started our distance education diploma completion program in 1997, we have graduated over 5,200 students who have, with their new Liberty High School Diploma in hand, gone on to start more rewarding jobs, attend colleges all across the country, and find new and better paying careers.
We look forward to adding you to our list of successful graduates.
